If you’re ready to refresh your hair with more volume and length, you’re probably wondering: How much are hair extensions?

It’s hard to provide a one-size-fits-all answer to “how much do extensions cost?” simply because there are so many different options and types of hair extensions to choose from. Here’s a breakdown of the key considerations, as well as the costs of popular extension and wig styles from the Lauren Ashtyn Collection.

4 Factors Impacting the Cost of Hair Extensions

Hair extension prices can vary depending on several important factors. Knowing what you’re looking for can help you narrow down your options and settle on a realistic budget.

1. Material and Quality

The overall cost of new hair extensions depends on the quality of the hair and the type of material it's made from. Synthetic hair extensions are less expensive, whereas 100% human hair extensions cost more – but human hair extensions will look a lot more natural.

2. Amount of Hair

The price for hair extensions differ depending on the amount of hair you’re getting. If you’re looking for a few clip-in hair extensions for a little extra volume, you won’t pay nearly as much as if you’re purchasing a wig that provides a full head of luxurious hair.

3. Length and Style

Longer hair extensions will usually cost more than short ones due to the amount of material needed to create the style. Our wigs and extensions start at 6” for medium-short lob styles, and are available in varying lengths up to 24” for long, romantic styles. Whether you choose curly, wavy or straight extensions can also impact the price.

4. Installation and Service

When setting your budget, keep in mind that you may have to factor in expenses beyond just the cost of hair extensions themselves. Some styles, especially more permanent hair extensions, need to be installed by a stylist or technician.

Each salon will set its own rate, and it might be based on factors such as the time spent, the installation method and the number of strands. The best way to estimate the service cost is to contact your local salon and ask for a quote.

Don’t forget that it’s customary to tip hair stylists and technicians for a job well done. They not only work to carefully integrate the extensions with your natural hair but may also wash, trim and style your new ‘do so you leave looking fabulous. Set aside about 15% to 20% of the service cost as a gratuity.

Now that you’re familiar with the factors behind pricing differences, how much are extensions for hair styles you’re looking for? Let’s look at average costs and our own prices:

Cost of Halo Extensions

For halo extensions, you can expect to pay a few hundred dollars. Our luxurious, layered halo hair extensions cost around $650 to $750, depending on the length. The nice thing is that, since you can install our halo clip-in extensions yourself, there aren’t any installation costs to worry about.

Cost of Other Extension Styles

As Fash.com estimates, tape-in hair extensions cost an average of $200 and glue-in hair extensions are about $500. Sew-in hair extensions – also known as weaves – average about $600. These types of extensions are installed by professionals, so you’ll also pay for the service and gratuity.

Cost of a Wig

According to Allure, lace-front wigs made from human hair can cost up to $5,000 since they’re typically hand-tied and customized to your head and hairline. For our line of lace-front human hair wigs, prices range from about $3,000 to $3,200, depending on the length and style.

Meanwhile, cheap synthetic wigs are available for only a few hundred dollars. These aren’t ideal for long-term wear, though, and they won’t exactly look natural. That’s why it can be worth it to invest in a higher-quality piece made with human hair that will blend in seamlessly with your natural hairline.

Is Getting Hair Extensions Worth It?

If hair extensions or a lace-front wig are in your budget, then they can absolutely be worth the investment – especially if you plan to wear your new style daily. Whether you simply want to pump up the volume on your naturally fine hair, or you want more coverage for thinning hair or hair growing in after being shaved off, high-quality wigs and extensions can offer comfort, style and confidence that’s hard to put a price tag on.
