Are you considering hair extensions, but now sure how you would style your hair with them? Maybe you already have clip-ins waiting for wear, but the process seems too complicated to even begin. You may have seen influencer hair tutorials and found yourself feeling even more confused than you were at first. We are here to encourage and teach you!
Styling clip-in extensions is not rocket science. The process is simple; however, you should still proceed with care. Extensions require a delicate touch, whether you’re styling, storing, or wearing them. This blog will teach you how to install, care for, style, and wear clip-in hair extensions with 4 easy tips!
The Right Way to Install and Care for Clip-In Hair Extensions
Learn how to wear clip-in hair extensions from the experts! These tips will keep your clip-ins looking fresh and beautiful. Clip-in extensions can look even better than biological hair, but they do require TLC. We know that 100% Remy European human hair extensions are an investment, so please follow the care steps below!
- Install gently and carefully, following these steps. Always part your natural hair before installing!
- Store carefully: 100% dry, brushed, smooth, and in their satin bag.
- Replenish moisture with conditioner and hair masks or oils.
- Give your hair rest days—even the lightest hair extensions can create tension for our biological hair.
What Not to Do with Clip-In Extensions
- Do not sleep in them
- Do not shower while wearing them
- Do not yank them out
- Do not over wash
- Do not forget conditioner
4 Tips for Styling Hair with Clip-In Extensions
- Blend with your biological hair—a full tutorial for blending hair with extensions is available here. You can also clip the extensions upside down to hide shorter hairs. If you’re wearing clip-ins for the first time, we recommend taking them to your hairstylist. They can trim and blend them with your natural hair.
- Whatever your hair length, you should start with the bottom layers and work your way up your head to the crown. A hand mirror and rattail comb will help with sectioning.
If you have longer hair, you can use a claw clip to secure the upper layers while working on the bottom. Take it slowly and ask for help if you need a second set of hands the first time you install your extensions. You won’t find any judgment here. - Optionally, you can pre-style the extensions to spare your arms. However, you will likely need to go back through your hair and use heat tools to perfect your style and blend the extensions. This can be time-consuming, but it’s worth it to get your look just right!
- Backcomb the roots and hair spray the clips for extra hold. Backcombing can also help to hide the clips, especially if you have thinner hair. If you follow these steps and continue to struggle to hide your clips, some of the following hairstyles may help.
Styling clip-in hair extensions is completely doable! Once you practice once or twice, the process will be second nature. You will find some of the above tips (and more) in this blog post.
Style Inspiration: How to Wear Hair Extension Clip-Ins
You can achieve almost any hairstyle with clip-in extensions! However, we know that endless possibilities might seem overwhelming, rather than exciting. We love these style ideas from Michelle Tyler and Vogue. See images on their sites and have fun recreating these looks!
-
Pretty Put-Together Ponytail
Michelle Tyler elevates this sleek, mid-height ponytail by wrapping the hair tie with a strand of hair. You may find this style easier to accomplish if you clip your extensions to your head at the angle of your ponytail. Keep your fly-aways down with a slick of gel. -
Half-Up Half-Down
This classic shy girl hair style may partially hide your face, but it will also hide your extension clips! This style is a great option for those with thinning or fine hair. -
Messy Ballet Bun
Create this style by making a low bun at the nape of your neck. Loosen the bun and some strands of hair around your face and you’ll be good to go. If you prefer a more chic and modern bun, skip the last step and add high-hold hair spray. -
Middle Part Goddess Waves
We can’t all be Zendaya, but hair extensions can give each of us waist length waves! Part this style in the middle and use salt spray for extra texture. You can also let your extensions air dry in loose braids to get this look without heat styling. -
Braided Pigtails
This style looks incredible on Willow Smith’s braids. You can also achieve adorable volumized braids with long extensions. This is a fun way to keep your hair out of your face in the summer or during workouts, as well! -
Beachy Waves
Celebrities from the Hadids to the Olsens have rocked beachy waves for years, and this timeless style is easy to recreate! Use a large curling iron and salt spray for texture. -
Braids and Curls
Zöe Kravitz’s braids falling into loose waves gives us bohemian vibes. To take inspiration from this style, curl your hair with a wide-barreled iron or wand and braid small sections for extra texture. -
Full Long Bob
Hair extensions aren’t just for long hair. Kim Kardashian’s sharp bobs are the perfect example of using extensions to add volume, rather than length.
