Topper Care: How To Keep Your Topper Looking and Feeling Brand New

At the Lauren Ashtyn Collection, we understand how much of an investment our luxury hair toppers are. That’s why we have put together this guide on how to keep your topper looking and feeling brand new. Follow these tips, tricks, and recommendations to maintain the freshness and beauty of your hair topper, while also extending its lifespan.

Keeping Your Topper Clean

Whether you are wearing your topper daily or only on special occasions, it is important to keep it clean. There are a couple factors that need to be considered when deciding how often to wash it: How frequently you wear it and what products you are using. So, let's dive into these considerations so you can better understand what works best for you and your topper:

Frequency of Use

How often you wear your topper will determine how often it needs to be washed. If you are wearing it daily, we suggest washing every 4-6 weeks or when it starts to feel dry and not as soft.
If you are only wearing your topper for special occasions, you won’t need to wash as frequently. We’d recommend washing it only when it starts to feel dirty, which will be different for everyone depending on how much product is used when styling your topper and what environment you are in when wearing your topper.

Products Being Used

The products you use on your topper will also determine how often you wash it. If you use the products made specifically for Hair Toppers by The Lauren Ashtyn Collection, we recommend you wash your topper every 4-6 weeks.
We do not recommend any other products to be used on your hair topper other than the ones on our website. We cannot guarantee or predict how the topper will be affected by other products.

Storing Your Topper Correctly

When your topper is not being worn, it is important to store it correctly to keep it from becoming damaged. The best way to do this is to keep it pinned to a Lauren Ashtyn Collection Mannequin Head. This will prevent damage while also keeping the mesh base clean.
Pro Tip: When pinning your Topper to a mannequin head, use 4-5 t-pins around the silicone, polyurethane edges to prevent the mesh base from being damaged.
If you do not have a mannequin head, we would recommend storing your topper flat in a dry, clean area with the mesh base facing down.
Pro Tip: When you are not wearing your topper, make sure all of the clips are closed to keep the hair from getting tangled in the clips.

Replacing Topper Clips

All our toppers have four clips attached to the mesh base that are used to secure the topper to your hair. These clips can sometimes break or become bent/worn out. That is why we have replacement clips on our website. It is a quick and easy replacement that can help prolong the life of your topper.
Follow this step by step to replace your topper clips:

Cut Off The Old Clips

If the old clip(s) is not already off, you will need to take it off before replacing it with a new one. The best way to do this is to get a seam ripper or embroidery scissors and very carefully rip the thread that is currently holding the clip on. Once the clip is removed, you can mark where the threads were with a few pins or a dot of marker if needed.

Sew On The New Clips

For this part you will need a sewing needle and a thick embroidery thread that is a similar color to the topper. Starting from the inside of the topper, begin by hand sewing the first corner of the clip onto the silicone, polyurethane edge, making sure the clip is closed with its teeth pointed towards the center of the topper.

Quick Tip: The top two holes of the clip will be attached to the silicone edge and the bottom two will be attached to the mesh base.

Secure The Thread

Once you have secured the first corner of the clip onto the topper, finish off your hand sewing by tying 1-2 knots with the thread, making sure the knots are being tied on the inside of the topper. Once you have finished, cut off the excess thread and continue the same process with the other 3 corners of the clip.
