Nov 24, 2017

You’ve almost made it…2017 is nearly over and it’s finally time to celebrate. Whether you’re celebrating the end of a rough year you can’t wait to kiss goodbye or toasting to a great year that you’re hoping to top in 2018, the bottom line is that it’s party time. Going out on New Year’s Eve is special because the standard rules don’t really apply—in fact, it’s almost like going in costume. And who doesn’t love costume parties?

The Look

When it comes to hair, the bigger, the better. Whether you are wearing long waves, a sleek up do, or a complicated braid—adding volume is key for maximum drama. To add volume, work a little dry shampoo through the roots of your hair and gently tousle. If you are looking for a little more, you can backcomb the top sections of your hair and spritz with hairspray to add instant texture and volume. Finally, using a crown topper is an easy way to add volume and cover any thinning around the crown. For make up, now is the time to bust out those YouTube tutorials and add the drama. A classic smoky eye, winged liner, and red lip are all you need.

The Outfit

Sparkly sequins, eye catching metallics, and the classic LBD (little black dress) are all your friends when it comes to watching the infamous ball drop. This may be one of the few times of the year when sequins and glitter are not only allowed but actually encouraged, so take advantage! Sheer panels, cut outs, and low backs are all good options to add a sexy edge while not having to worry about anything falling out—because chances are, you’ll be dancing at some point in the evening. This year was a comeback for all things 90’s and with that comes the embrace of crushed velvet. So if you’re feeling nostalgic, this is a great time to try some on. Finally, it goes without saying that the body con fit a must on this night—but if you’re feeling a little too body conscious, wear a more comfortable fit and add the drama elsewhere, like with a really great pair heels.

The Shoes

Stiletto heels, knee high boots, caged heeled sandals, sparkly pumps…the options for a fun and dramatic shoe are endless when it comes to New Year’s eve. The weather where you live may play a part in your selection, however. If you are currently residing in a more frigid climate, the addition of tights is a good call. However, this is New Year’s so why not play up the tights too? Tights today come in plenty of fun colors like bright fuchsia or blue, as well as every pattern you can think of. From fishnets to polka dots, stripes to florals, a fun patterned pair of tights can be your ticket to dressing up an otherwise simple dress with the added bonus of keeping your legs warm and cozy. Win, win.
