Caring for Your Hair Topper or Wig

How often to wash, which products protect the hair, how to store your piece, and what really determines how long it lasts.

How long do your hair toppers and wigs last?

With proper care, up to 3 years — but the honest answer is that it depends entirely on you.

Lifespan comes down to how well the piece is cared for: which products you use, how often you shampoo it, how often you wear it, how much you style it, and which styling tools you use.

We use the couch analogy. Two families buy the same white couch. One barely uses it. The other has kids and pets on it every day. Same couch, very different lifespan. A hair piece is no different — wear and tear is what decides it.

In practice, clients who wear a piece every day average about one piece per year. Someone who rotates between two pieces, uses lightweight sulfate-free products, keeps heat to a minimum and stores it properly can stretch a piece well toward — or past — the three-year mark.

How often should I wash my topper or wig?

Every 4 to 6 weeks, or as needed based on how often you wear it. Less is genuinely more here.

Your piece receives none of the natural oils your scalp produces, so washing it too often dries the hair out and shortens its life.

When it is time to wash:

  • Gently shampoo the hair.
  • Apply conditioner and leave it for 10 to 20 minutes.
  • Rinse thoroughly with cool to cold water.
  • Finish with a leave-in conditioner and heat protectant before styling.

What products should I use on my hair piece?

Sulfate-free and alcohol-free shampoos, conditioners, leave-in conditioners and hair oils. These maintain the softness, shine and longevity of 100% European Remy human hair.

We recommend our own Lauren Ashtyn Collection hair care and Moroccanoil® lines, both chosen to nourish and protect your investment.

Always apply a heat protectant before hot tools.

Avoid volumizing products, dry shampoos and hair powders. They dry the hair out and affect the quality of the piece — this is the mistake we correct most often.

How do I care for my topper, wig or extensions day to day?

  • Use sulfate-free and alcohol-free shampoo and conditioner.
  • Wash only when needed.
  • Always use a heat protectant before styling.
  • Brush gently with a brush made for extensions or wigs.
  • Never sleep while your piece is wet.
  • Store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

How should I store my piece when I’m not wearing it?

In a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat and humidity.

For the best results, keep it on a wig stand or mannequin head, which holds its shape and style. Travelling or storing it for a while? Use the original box or a protective storage bag to prevent dust and tangling.

Before storing, make sure the piece is clean, completely dry and gently brushed. See How to Pin Your Topper to a Mannequin Head.

Will clip-in toppers damage my natural hair?

No. Our clip-in extensions and hair toppers are designed to be gentle on your natural hair, and go on or come off in a few seconds. Worn and cared for properly, they should not damage healthy hair.

The clips are pressure-sensitive rather than tight, and we recommend removing your piece at night.
