Getting Started with a Hair Topper or Wig
How to work out whether you need a topper, a wig or extensions — what size base covers your thinning, and how our free colour consultation works.

What is the difference between a hair topper and a wig — which one do I need?
The right solution depends on how much thinning you have and how much coverage you want.
Light Volume Toppers, from $650, are designed for early-stage thinning. They add natural volume and root coverage while blending with your existing hair.
Full Volume Toppers, from $1,050, have a larger base that covers more of the crown — the choice for more advanced thinning or overall volume loss.
Full Wigs, $3,100 to $3,700, give complete coverage for extensive or total hair loss. They can be worn with or without natural hair; if you have no hair, the clips come out and the wig pairs with our Velvet Wig Gripper.

How do I choose between a Light Volume and Full Volume topper?
It comes down to how much coverage and volume you need.
The Light Volume topper has a 3″ × 5″ breathable base that clips in around the roots, in 12–16″ lengths. It suits early-stage thinning, filling in the part line and adding volume without extra weight.
The Full Volume topper has a larger 5″ × 6.5″ base — close to twice the coverage — in 12–18″ and 5–6″ lengths. It clips securely around the crown to conceal more advanced thinning across the top, crown, sides and back.
For very small areas of thinning, the Light Volume “Mini” has a 3″ × 3.5″ base with 5–6″ of hair.
Watch Full Volume vs Light Volume to see them side by side.
What base sizes do your hair toppers come in?
| Piece | Base size | Hair length |
|---|---|---|
| Full Volume Topper | 5″ × 6.5″ | 12–18″ and 5–6″ |
| Light Volume Topper | 3″ × 5″ | 12–16″ |
| Light Volume “Mini” | 3″ × 3.5″ | 5–6″ |
When in doubt, size up slightly. A base that fully covers your thinning area always looks more natural than one that is fractionally too small.
How do I measure my head or thinning area?
You don’t need a measuring tape. The most accurate way is a free virtual consultation: send us 4 to 5 photos of your hair in natural daylight, worn down, with no filters or editing.
Include the front, both sides, the top or crown, and the back. Our Hair Experts will assess your level of thinning, coverage needs, hair length and colour, then recommend the piece, base size and shade.
If you are considering a wig, sizing is even simpler — every wig has an adjustable stretchy band with clasps.

Can I see and try hair pieces in person?
Yes. Visit our Spartanburg or Charleston salon in South Carolina, where our Hair Experts and wig specialists give personalised consultations.
Not nearby? Our Pop-Up Salon events travel the country. You’ll meet the team, explore the collection and get personal recommendations.
And if neither is convenient, a complimentary virtual consultation by text, email or WhatsApp lets you shop with confidence from anywhere.
Are the wigs adjustable to my head size?
Yes. Every wig is handcrafted on a lightweight, breathable micro-mesh base with an adjustable stretchy band and clasps, so you can customise the fit for all-day comfort.
Whether you have natural hair or complete hair loss, the adjustable design holds the wig securely. Without hair, the clips can be removed and the wig worn with a Velvet Wig Gripper.
Can I wear a topper with a pixie cut or very short hair?
Yes. Our 5–6″ Light Volume and 5–6″ Full Volume toppers are made for shorter styles, giving coverage and fullness without overwhelming your natural hair once cut and styled for you.
Send a few photos during a free consultation and we’ll recommend which will blend most naturally with your cut.
Do your pieces come with bangs?
Not as standard — but bangs can be cut into any piece by a licensed stylist, including ours at a salon or pop-up appointment. Because it is 100% human hair, it cuts exactly like your own.
